In recent years, under the multiple impacts of increased human activities, climate change, and sea level rise, the risk of extreme flood damage in estuarine and coastal areas has shown an increasing trend, seriously threatening the safety of estuarine and coastal embankments. Due to the complex and drastic changes in the dynamic conditions of the estuarine and coastal areas, as well as the numerous factors that cause disasters, and the significant suddenness and strong destructive nature of the related processes, the difficulty in the research field of estuarine and coastal embankment safety risk assessment and disaster prediction and early warning has increased. This is also a comprehensive and cross cutting international frontier and hot issue in the field of disaster prevention and reduction. This article focuses on the international scientific research hotspots of safety risk assessment and early warning for estuarine and coastal embankments, as well as the major strategic needs for national disaster prevention and reduction. The current research status and trends of safety risk assessment and early warning technology for estuarine and coastal embankments are summarized both domestically and internationally. The key scientific and technological issues that urgently need to be solved in the research of safety risk assessment and early warning for estuarine and coastal embankments are analyzed. Finally, the relevant suggestions and prospects for future research directions and content are proposed in response to the shortcomings of existing research.
